| In our ongoing efforts to understand where the term Chicagoland came from, we last published a theory from Re/Max's Michael Lunn that the word was the work of auto dealers. His brothers Jon, Matt and Timothy happen to own ChicagoLand Self Storage and know a little about their namesake. They forwarded an article from the Encyclopedia of Chicago that says old-time Chicago Tribune editor and publisher Col. Robert McCormick gets credit. He used it to refer to "the city and its grain, timber, and livestock hinterlands covering parts of five states (Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Iowa)" that his paper reached by rail. We should have known a journalist was behind it the whole time. Since our e-newsletter goes worldwide by email, we're starting a movement to rebrand Earth as Bisnowland. What? Too soon? |
