WeWork’s Next Boston Move Could Come With A Power Lunch Upstairs

Wework Has A Location At One Beacon Street (Center Tower With Red Antenna).

A downtown skyscraper known for its high-profile private club will soon house a rapidly growing co-working behemoth downstairs.

WeWork announced Friday it will continue its Boston expansion by opening a 60K SF branch next year across the 14th and 15th floors of One Beacon Street in Beacon Hill. The co-working company has significantly grown from its 2014 Boston arrival with offices in Fort Point and the Leather District. The company now operates offices in Central Square in Cambridge, Back Bay and will open an office near North Station in early 2018, the Boston Globe reports.

The Back Bay WeWork has expanded since the company opened at 31 St. James Ave. in February 2016. Amazon leases space there in addition to its permanent Kendall Square offices, while more is being added in Fort Point. The One Beacon addition is notable, as it is WeWork’s first push into an office tower in Boston as opposed to its usual local strategy of lower floors in shorter buildings.

Boston Consulting Group, One Beacon’s longtime tenant, might be leaving the tower for Pier 4 in the Seaport, but WeWork employees will still cross paths with some of Boston’s biggest names in the lobby.

The building is steps away from the Massachusetts State House. A September Boston magazine profile on the death of the power lunch identified the UMass Club on the skyscraper’s 32nd floor as the new daytime den for power moves. Gov. Charlie Baker, Senate President Stan Rosenberg and House Speaker Robert DeLeo (a notable advocate of the Suffolk Downs Amazon HQ2 bid) are all members.
