Nixon Peabody Officially Moving to 53 State St.

53 State St.

A leading Boston law firm is committed to downtown Boston, albeit in a new building and less space.

Nixon Peabody has signed a lease for 105K SF at 53 State St., also known as Exchange Place. The 300-person office is expected to move into four floors at the downtown tower when the law firm’s lease at 100 Summer St. expires by the end of January. The lease for the space formerly used by law firm Goodwin and Boston Consulting Group runs for 16 years and eight months, the Boston Globe reports.

Nixon Peabody’s new office will occupy floors 29 through 32 and is considerably smaller than the 167K SF it has at 100 Summer St. The firm’s new office will have an open feel similar to its offices in New York and Los Angeles, Nixon Peabody CEO Andrew Glincher told the Globe. The law firm will join tenants like the Globe and advertising agency Hill Holliday at Exchange Place.

The move comes amid a national trend of law firms changing their real estate requirements as a way to cut costs and respond to changing work patterns.

“The way people travel and use offices has just changed so much, between working remotely and working at clients,” Glincher told the Globe. “You just don’t use space the same way.”
