The man who ran the Boston Police Department in the aftermath of the 2015 Boston Marathon bombing will now review sexual assault claims for Wynn Resorts.

Former Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, who now runs his own private security firm, has been hired to be part of a three-person “compliance committee” in charge of reviewing all future sexual assault claims at Wynn Resorts, the Boston Herald reports.

The hiring news comes four months before the casino resort company plans to open the $2.6B Encore Boston Harbor north of Boston. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission awaits the findings of a report that will determine if the company will be able to retain its license to operate in Greater Boston.

The MGC has investigated Wynn Resorts since shortly after a bombshell report in 2018 accused the company’s founder and former CEO, Steve Wynn, of decades of sexual misconduct against employees. Massachusetts officials wanted to see how much Wynn’s company knew of the alleged behavior. Due to a lawsuit filed by Steve Wynn in late 2018, the findings of the MGC report have been held up in court, but may soon be unsealed.

Wynn Resorts has gone to great lengths distancing itself from its former leader, clearing its board of members with ties to Steve Wynn and even changing the name of the Boston casino from Wynn Boston Harbor to Encore.

The Davis hire is the latest example of the company publicly trying to show it has taken the sexual misconduct allegations seriously. It also comes days after the Nevada Gaming Commission fined the company $20M, the largest fine in NGC history, for ignoring employee claims of sexual misconduct, the Wall Street Journal reports.

John Michela, an attorney representing Nevada, praised Wynn Resorts for making sweeping changes but also noted the company failed to act until it was under media scrutiny.
