Our two recent mega snowfalls have shown us the value of fast, modern mass transit -- and the horrendous hassle of its absence. The Somerville mayor (pictured shoveling out a neighbor) says his city that borders on East Cambridge and Kendall Square is on track to have some of the best mass transit and newest mixed-use developments. The federal government recently committed $1B for the resurgent city to use for six new Green Line stops. At the same time, $2.3B in new development is underway (a trend we covered), and Joseph has proposed an overhaul of city zoning to encourage mixed-use projects within a quarter-mile of T-stops.
