MASS BUILDING CONGRESS

Kling Stubbins? senior director Scott Simpson is now a Hall of Famer, at least as far as the Massachusetts Building Congress is concerned. At MBC?s 90th annual dinner Thursday at the Renaissance Waterfront Hotel, Kling Stubbins, Dimeo Construction, and MIT were all inducted into that hallowed hall. Among Dimeo?s many outstanding projects: the Rose Center and the School of Art and Theater at Yale. Back in the day, Kling Subbins designed the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and is designing a new 250K SF lab on Mass Ave in Cambridge for Forest City.
At the pre-dinner reception, we ran into MIT?s planning director Pam Delphenich, a major player in the recently completed 10-year,$1.4B development plan that set a new tone for the Institute. Upstaging some of MIT?s old bunkerlike academic buildings and occasional Quonset hut, are 10 new buildings, many by starchitects like Frank Gehry, Steven Holl, and Fumihiko Maki. Now, Pam is working on a new 10-year plan to renovate campus stalwarts and is commuting to Moscow to help set up an MIT research institute.
Denise Marien is the new director of development for BOND, which in December will start construction on Harvard?s Tata Hall to be completed in early ?14. BOND also recently completed a science center for Dartmouth College. WSP Flack + Kurtz?s Mark Warren tells us that his firm is commissioning UMass Medical?s new building and is within days of finishing the renovation of MIT?s W61 dorm on Memorial Drive and in a year will wrap up work on a new 500k SF science center for U Mass.
