Alexandria Real Estate Equities? chairman and CEO Joel Marcus, here with Governor Deval Patrick, has reason to be smiling (beyond the matching tie incident). Last Thursday, his company and Boston Properties broke ground on two new buildings for Biogen Idec totaling nearly 500K SF. The life science company will bring back to Cambridge 700 business-side staffwho had left for a new suburban build-to-suit in June '10. They'll rejoin 1,300 R&D and production staff that remained in the city. Boston Properties is building 190k SF at 17 Cambridge Center, while the 307k SF Alexandria's building for Biogen kicks off its1.7M SF Alexandria Center at Kendall Square.
