Tradepoint Atlantic Now Owns All Of Sparrows Point After Purchase Of Shipyard

A Satellite View Of The Sprawling Tradepoint Atlantic Development Site In Sparrows Point.

Tradepoint Atlantic now owns every portion of Sparrows Point, the former Bethlehem Steel factory site.

According to state property records, Tradepoint Atlantic completed the $33.5M purchase of the 150-acre Sparrows Point Shipyard April 30, bringing the development site's total footprint up to 3,250 acres. The previous owner, SPS Limited Partnership LLLP, has no public record of its ownership structure and records from lawsuits SPS filed against Sparrows Point's previous surrounding owners for environmental damages had no names attached.

Bethlehem Steel owned the shipyard until 1997, when it sold the land to Baltimore Marine, which in turn sold it to SPS in 2004. The reunification of the shipyard with the rest of Sparrows Point gives Tradepoint Atlantic not just more land for distribution centers, but additional deep water ports and dry docks.

The massive complex already boasts operational distribution centers for FedEx, Atlantic Forest Products and Automotive, with an Under Armour facility due to open by the end of this year and an 855K SF Amazon distribution center also underway. Tradepoint has also kicked off the retail portion of its site, the 70-acre Shoppes at Tradepoint Atlantic, with the opening of a Royal Farms gas station and convenience store.

Once the Amazon and Under Armour facilities are completed, Tradepoint Atlantic is expected to employ more people than Bethlehem Steel did before its closure; Amazon alone estimates 1,500 jobs will be needed for its center. Even with all the activity, Tradepoint remains by far the largest area of available industrial space in the Baltimore region.
