In 2017, with a sweeping tax reform package, President Donald Trump ushered in a new vehicle to encourage capital to invest in some of the most distressed communities across the United States.

Called opportunity zones, these areas allow investors and businesses to defer capital gains taxes if investors place their gains in local businesses and development. There are 260 opportunity zones in Georgia, 40% of which are in the state's urban areas, including Downtown Atlanta, the southside and Cobb County.
