NY Court of Appeals Green-lights NYU Expansion

New York

Despite efforts led by a celeb NIMBY set (Matthew Broderick, Mark Ruffalo and John Leguizamo) the New York State Court of Appeals has given the green light to NYU's four-building, 1.9M SF Greenwich Village expansion. To make way for the project, the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center at 181 Mercer St and the buildings at 130 Bleecker St and 535-555 LaGuardia Place will be demoed. The new buildings will be designed by Davis Brody Bond and Kieran Timberlake, NY YIMBY reports. The first will be a 500-bed dorm, at 20 E Houston St, that will feature 80 classrooms, a gym and a theater. Mercer Playground, LaGuardia Park, LaGuardia Corner Gardens and the Mercer Houston Dog Run will be affected during construction. The entire expansion is expected to be complete by 2035. [NYY]
