Church Rises from the Ashes at Trade Center Site

New York

Fourteen years after St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was destroyed in the 9/11 attacks, construction on the St. Nicholas National Shrine has begun. The $35M Santiago Calatrava-designed church and Nondenominational Bereavement Center will be shaped like a dome, with a white Pentelic marble veneer quarried from the same vein in Greece as the Parthenon's marble. The 48.5-foot diameter dome will glow at nightfall and overlook the 9/11 Memorial. Construction is expected to complete in two years. [NYT]
