Walmart Says E-Commerce Expansion Will Help Add 10,000 Jobs This Year

Walmart said it will add 10,000 new U.S. jobs this year as it opens more stores, expands existing locations and increases its e-commerce offerings.

The announcement comes just before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration and echoes claims made by other large U.S. companies, such as Amazon’s promise last week to create 100,000 full-time U.S. jobs over the next 18 months, the Wall Street Journal reports. The claims of American job growth may be an attempt to get on Trump’s good side, especially considering how Trump responded to Carrier’s plan to outsource jobs.

While Trump thanked Walmart in a tweet for the announcement, it will take more than 10,000 jobs to revitalize U.S. manufacturing, something many critics accuse Walmart of hurting as it’s the largest importer in the country by shipping container volume. [WSJ]
