Teen clothing retailer Rue21 is closing nearly 400, or one-third, of its stores to focus efforts on strengthening its online business.

The Cranberry, Pa.-based retailer announced the closures in a Facebook post over the weekend. The closed stores will shrink its portfolio to roughly 700 stores in 48 states, the Associated Press reports.

"It's true — we are closing some stores. It was a difficult but necessary decision," Saturday's Facebook post read.  "We still have hundreds of stores open across the country and our website open for business."

The company did not specify when the stores will begin to shutter, but it has already started marketing store closing sales on its website.
