Retail Earnings Should Provide Some Clarity

In light of disappointing retail sales, this week’s earnings reports from some of the largest US retailers are highly anticipated. A highlight of a slow week for economic data, all eyes will be on Walmart and Home Depot on Tuesday, followed by Target on Wednesday and Gap on Thursday. Marketwatch reports that retail sales growth has been dropping steadily since the beginning of the year. Goldman Sachs has cited concerns that falling oil prices have done little to boost consumer spending. We'll hopefully gain some clarity this week on the overall health of retail and its future prospects for the year. [MW]
