Hillbillies and Hackers

Los Angeles

Recently, we came and listened to a tale 'bout a poor mountaineer, er, two South Bay industrial brokers who launched a charity golf tournament. The third annual tourney known as The Hack, co-founded by Cushman & Wakefield's Tom Sheets and Colliers' Adam Deierling, just took place at the Manhattan Beach Marriott golf course and raised $35k—more than double last year's take. The event picks a different beneficiary each year, supporting causes like childhood brain cancer and after-school programs for low-income youths, Adam told us yesterday.

This event attracted 80 golfers—mostly CRE pros from the South Bay as well as other parts of LA and Orange counties—and boasted a hillbilly theme. (Can you take a mulligan if your ball lands in the cee-ment pond?) Adam and Tom were riding their bikes up to Isla Vista a few summers ago when they got the idea for The Hack. "I thought it was going to be 20 of our buddies from the industry, and then it just snowballed." While not a Colliers tournament, this year, The Hack utilized the support of the brokerage giant's 501(c)(3) org, the Colliers Foundation.
