For the second year in a row, Houston has taken the top spot in Charity Navigator's annual Metro Market Study. Houston is No. 1 for overall financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency. Houston charities also received proportionally the highest donation of any city in the study. The median contribution for Houston charities is nearly $4.32M.

54% of Houston's 106 largest charities were given four out of five stars from the charity watchdog group. The Houston Food Bank has the highest overall score in the metro. “Simply put, there’s a tremendous amount of philanthropic energy in that community right now," Charity Navigator CEO Michael Thatcher said in a press release accompanying the report.

To compile the study, Charity Navigator analyzed the 30 largest metro areas in the US, which included 62% of the country's charities. Rounding out the top five in overall score are St. Louis, Tampa, Dallas and San Diego.
