Another block will soon look different in Downtown Houston.
The former Houston Press building, at 1621 Milan St., will be torn down, a spokesperson from Chevron, which purchased the building in 2013, told the Houston Chronicle.
"Chevron regularly evaluates and prioritizes its portfolio. The 1621 Milam building has reached the end of its useful life. Chevron plans to demolish the building," the company said in a statement.
The company has requested a demolition permit from the city but released no future plans for the site. The building, which dates back to the 1920s and is one of the oldest existing buildings in Downtown, was recently appraised at $17M, according to the Chronicle.
Revitalization is occurring in several pockets Downtown. The push is to become more of an 18-hour environment with more residents living, working and playing within the submarket. Future projects include food halls, new residential towers and office buildings, and most of these are being done by adapting or demolishing existing properties.
