Heights Considering Loosening Alcohol Rules Further

Placeholder
Houston Heights

A measure that seeks to loosen The Heights' restrictive alcohol sales for bars and restaurants will be on November's ballot. Houston's city secretary confirmed to the Houston Chronicle the petition had enough signatures. City Council will vote Wednesday to place the measure before voters.

Last year Heights residents voted to get rid of the 105-year-old ban on beer and wine sales at grocery stores. However, diners still must submit a driver's license to join a private club if they want alcohol at restaurants or bars in the area. Supporters of reform say that while the ordinance does not affect the daily lives of consumers much, it puts Heights establishments at a competitive disadvantage.
