Henry S. Miller III, Influential Dallas Developer, Dies At 79
Henry S. Miller III, a prominent developer and member of an influential family real estate empire, has died at 79. A cause of death wasn’t disclosed.
With the West Village project he developed in Uptown Dallas with his company Urban Partners, Miller helped popularize the type of mixed-use, walkable projects that now dominate the metro. The 400K SF walkable urban village opened in 2001 with a mix of multifamily residences, retail and public spaces.
During his time with the Dallas-based firm Henry S. Miller Cos., he helped oversee the revitalization of Highland Park Village alongside his father, Henry S. Miller Jr. The family purchased the luxury shopping development in 1976 and helped elevate its profile by adding luxury brands that weren’t anywhere else in Texas.
The family sold Highland Park Village in 2009 to Dallas developer Ray Washburne.
“I learned a lot from him over the years because he was such a visionary retail developer,” Washburne told The Dallas Morning News.
Henry S. Miller III also helped build the Preston Royal Shopping Center into a neighborhood touchstone in North Dallas. The shopping center was developed by Henry S. Miller Jr. alongside Trammel Crow in 1958.
But when he got involved, Henry S. Miller III prioritized stability and signed tenants to attract daily shoppers to the development, turning it into a successful retail center that has endured.
“Henry S. Miller III leaves a city forever changed by his vision,” Henry S. Miller Cos. said in an emailed statement. “From West Village’s groundbreaking creation to Highland Park Village and Preston Royal’s enduring neighborhood heart, his work reminds us that development is about people, community, and the legacy we leave for generations to come.”
In addition to multiple tenures with the firm started by his grandfather in 1914, Henry S. Miller III led companies such as Henry S. Miller Partners, Henry S. Miller Interests Inc. and international projects like the Loreto Bay Co. in Mexico, according to an email from Henry S. Miller Cos.
“My beloved Uncle Henry was a pioneering real estate developer who revolutionized the urban infill retail and residential mixed-use market with West Village,” Henry S. Miller Co. President and CEO Greg Miller told the DMN.
At the time of his death, Henry S. Miller III was the managing director of mixed-use development for Henry Miller Co., the chairman of Henry S. Miller Sustainable Partners LLC, and the CEO of Henry S. Miller Partners LLC, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Henry S. Miller III is survived by his children, Kathryn Miller Rabey, Henry S. Miller IV, Michael Alexander Miller and Alexander Lewis Miller, as well as 10 grandchildren.
