X Marks the Spot
The 14-story, $650M  hospital going up just off of I-290 near Ashland is almost finished, and the giant  X-shaped building will be among the most unique hospital campuses in the world (and the center of a nationwide game of tic tac toe, versus this building), says Rush University Medical Center CEO Dr. Larry Goodman, one of the speakers at Bisnow's Healthcare Summit coming up Tuesday at the MidAmerica Club. Dr Larry Goodman
Dr. Goodman tells us that planning for the facility started all the way back in '04 with members of the hospital staff helping out with the design. That's where the giant X came from—nurses say it allows them the best sightlines and the shortest walk between patients. The campus (slated to be LEED Gold) will also house an underground robotic material delivery  system, green roofs on the parking garages, outpatient hospital, new hospital, and 380 new beds. Dr. Goodman says some staff worked close to full-time on the design and planning of the hospital, which will be fully operational in '12.
