Silver shovels: They're not just spoons for rich giants, you know. Occasionally there's a need to break some ground, like on Roosevelt University's  new campus. Above, Roosevelt's Phillip A. Wisecup and  Alexander Sewell, state congressmen Will Burns  and  Kwame Raoul, alderman Robert Fioretti, Roosevelt's James Mitchell, Mayor Richard Daley, Roosevelt's Chuck Middleton, US Congressman Bobby Rush, Roosevelt's Miroslava Mejia Krug  and James Gandre, and state Congressman Greg Harris dug in on the 32-story vertical campus, which will house 600 student residences, classrooms, lecture halls, a dining center, student rec center, and the Walter E. Heller School of Business Administration.

The tower may be the only one under construction in the CBD this year. VOA  designed the structure, which will be connected to the Auditorium Building at 425 S. Wabash. The project will pursue LEED certification, with features such as a green roof, recycled and sustainable building materials, energy and water efficiencies, and attention to indoor environmental quality. The groundbreaking also celebrated the University's 65th anniversary.
