City Green Lights New Student Housing In University City

The Charlotte City Council unanimously approved rezoning for a plan by Haven Campus Communities to build a 332-unit student apartment development in University City, on a 6.8-acre site on University City Boulevard between Suther Road and John Kirk Drive. Originally the Atlanta-based student housing specialist had planned 349 units, but the project has been shaved by 17 units.

City staff weren't on board with the proposal, according to the Charlotte Observer. They pointed out it was more than twice as dense as recommendations in the non-binding University City Area Plan. The developer countered by noting that the university’s rapid growth is spurring the need for more places for students to live. [Observer]
