Eyes Turn To Roxbury With Latest Multifamily Proposal

Lower Roxbury's revitalization could finally take off with a local development partnership's apartment proposal.

Urban Core Development and Boston Real Estate Collaborative have proposed an $8M, 23-unit apartment building on Washington Street between Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Mass Boulevard. Developers hope the six-story building would add street life to the once-dormant Silver Line pathway, the Boston Herald reports.

Activists in the neighborhood have pushed for more affordable housing, while UDC and BREC have converted other buildings in the area into market-rate units. The Washington Street Gateway, a program aimed at bringing more development along the thoroughfare, has ushered in $1B in projects since 1997. Group members claim they want to see its impact push past Mass Ave toward Dudley Square.

Roxbury-based Long Bay Management has proposed a 25-story tower in nearby Dudley Square in recent years.
