How Downtown Boston Is Attracting More Than Millennials

Synergy Investments has a growing portfolio in Downtown Boston, including 10 Post Office Square, one of the city's true trophy assets. We chatted with Synergy managing director Maura Moffatt, who tells us Downtown is evolving and attracting multiple generations. Bisnow: Is Downtown too dependent on Millennials wanting to be there?

Maura: The attraction to Downtown goes far beyond just Millennials. Not only will today’s Millennials continue to want to be Downtown in future stages of their lives—as they age, [but] in Boston, we are fortunate to have an "evergreen" population of tomorrow’s Millennials. Every year the metro area’s colleges and universities graduate thousands of students who want to stay here to live, work and play. As they graduate, they're replaced by the incoming classes of new students that flock to Boston each year.

Bisnow: Boston's attractive to other age groups?

Maura: The manageable size and walkable nature of Downtown Boston also makes it tremendously attractive to people of all ages to either live or work or both—and while they are at either—take advantage of all the amenities available to "play," namely restaurants, bars, health clubs and shops.

Bisnow: How does Boston's economy factor into this?

Maura: The drivers of the innovation economy, of which Boston is one of the premier "innovation clusters" in the world, will continue to encourage Millennials as they age, and other generations, to want to be together, collaborate and "collide” with one another in the close proximity that Downtown Boston provides.

Finally, even as some Millennials may want to move to the suburbs, many will still want to work in an urban environment. The confluence of public transit options coming in from the suburbs will enable businesses to continue to attract and retain talent for Downtown jobs.
