US Attorney for DC Shuts Down Vince Gray Probe

Placeholder

The US Attorney for DC, Channing Phillips, announced this week that his office is ending the probe into possible campaign finance fraud around Vincent Gray's successful 2010 mayoral campaign. Shutting down the investigation, which led to 12 prosecutions, writes the Washington Post, is a "stunning turnaround." The US Attorney's Office says there is likely not enough "admissible evidence" to convict other individuals.

Not long before the Democratic Mayoral primary in 2014, the US Attorney's office accused Mayor Vince Gray, above, of being aware of an illegal campaign fund used for his previous campaign. An incumbent, Gray was defeated by Muriel Bowser, who then won the general election. During that time, the US Attorney for DC was Ronald Machen, who returned to WilmerHale as a partner in April. Channing Phillips was nominated as US Attorney by President Obama Oct. 8, 2015. [WaPo]
