COLIN RUSHING - SOUNDEXCHANGE

Placeholder

Colin Rushing is the SVP and General Counsel of SoundExchange, a nonprofit that collects and distributes digital performance rights royalties on behalf of sound recording copyright owners and featured artists. In 2014, it paid out almost $800M. Colin joined in 2008 from WilmerHale to create a new enforcement position, and became GC in 2011. The company has more than tripled since he joined, to around 150 people, with 10 in the legal department. Colin's working on an effort to set the rates for Internet radio for the next five years. A few years ago, he also helped negotiate a rate settlement with the entire webcasting industry. He says SoundExchange is creating an authoritative database of sound recordings, which will be very helpful for the music industry.

What you didn't know about Colin:

  • He met Chuck D of Public Enemy when he happened to stop by the SoundExchange office.
  • Colin isn't a musician but has always been a music fan. His favorite band is the Pixies.
  • He finds cooking to be the best form of therapy.
  • Growing up, Colin lived in Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, California, Virginia and Hawaii--but he moved back to VA for college (JMU) and law school (UVA).
