The Secret Side of P.J. Clarke's

The Secret Side of P.J. Clarke's

You've probably stopped by NYC-based P.J. Clarke's at 16th and K for happy hour or a burger at one of the red-and-white checkered tables. But did you notice the hidden doors? Look again at those opaque green-and-white panels behind the hostess stand. They slide open with the swipe of a membership card, giving way to a hidden staircase that leads to a very different space: warm wooden paneling, white tablecloths, a vintage bar that was originally an ice cream bar in Baltimore (complete with a bullet hole), intimate lighting, and semi-private booths and tables.

Sidecar Ladies

This is Sidecar, the members-only section of P.J. Clarke's. It affords DC's power-lunchers the exclusive, secluded setting one would expect at a private club, but with a more relaxed atmosphere. For instance, while the Sidecar menu does offer more upscale options (like steak and seafood) than the P.J. Clarke's menu, it still includes classic casual options like sliders and salads as well. The "Sidecar Ladies" above, who manage the club, often go the extra mile, like holding the Sidecar dining room open until 1am for any member who calls before 10pm to say they're on their way.
