Michael Jordan Donates $5M To Smithsonian African American History Museum

The newest addition to the National Mall, the 400k SF Museum of African American History and Culture, is set to open this fall, and it just received a huge donation from a sports and cultural icon.

Six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan is donating $5M to the museum, the Washington Post reports.

In addition to the cash, the Chicago Bulls legend is also donating a jersey he wore during the 1996 NBA finals. The museum will name a section of its sports gallery the Michael Jordan Hall.

The museum has already raised $278M in private donations, including gifts from African-American icons Oprah Winfrey and Sheila Johnson

Before Jordan made this gift to celebrate African-American history, he made a donation hoping to improve the future of race relations. Last month he gave $1M to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund to support its policing reform work. [WaPo]
