DC Streetcar May Get Green Light This Month

The long-delayed H Street streetcar could be up and running as soon as Feb. 26.

That’s the word from safety oversight officials within the DC Fire and EMS Department. The officials have approved the project, which will now undergo a final review that is expected to be completed in the next week, WAMU reports.

A letter from the DCFEMS State Safety Oversight Office has been sent to federal transportation officials to notify them that the line may start carrying passengers “on or after February 26, 2016, provided all final requisite activities are successfully completed by both parties.” There has been no confirmation of an opening date from the District Department of Transportation, which has worked in cooperation with the DCFEMS.

This would be the city’s first streetcar line since 1962, and stands alone as the only line in the works for the District's once ambitious streetcar plans. Simulated service was launched back in December along the full streetcar line, which spans 2.2 miles and follows H Street and Benning Road from Union Station to Oklahoma Avenue NE. [WAMU]
