Title: Principal
Main focus of your job: Infill residential development of multifamily and townhouses in urban locations, as well as note purchases and special situation investments
Years on the job: 7
Company: The Rubin Group
Memorable project: Currently redeveloping the former site of a church at 1512-1516 K Street SE into 27 condos. This project is great because we worked with the church’s leadership for over two years to help them translate their programmatic needs into real estate objectives. We were able to ensure that they could acquire their new property for less than the proceeds from the sale, retire all debts, and set up a dedicated funding source to continue their mission.
Current project: The Sanctuary (819 D Street NE). The restoration and conversion of a 19th-century Gothic Revival church into 30 condos (each has a different floorplan) with soaring ceilings and tons of original details including hand restored stained glass windows, cast-iron columns, and exposed brick. Sales started recently.
CRE career: Started out on a demo crew for renovations of houses for my father, from which I quickly learned that I needed to study harder in school. Apparently, I didn’t study hard enough as I ended up back in real estate after college. After working for an affordable housing developer, developing and redeveloping thousands of subsidized apartments across the country, I decided I wanted to work in my hometown.
Grew up: Chevy Chase, Maryland.
Current home: Georgetown.
School: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Job in another life: Olympic Rower (assuming I’m 6’5” in that life) or 1980s oil wildcatter.
Favorite app: Uber.
Favorite movie: The Big Short.
Favorite restaurant: Chadwicks (RIP).
Favorite band: Van Morrison.
Favorite vacation spot: Kiawah Island, South Carolina on the beach reading a book (even in the middle of winter).
Hidden talent: Great cook (terrible at cleaning up).
Coast, desert or mountain: Coast.
Bucket List: Drive a classic Land Rover from Cairo to Cape Town.
Thing you couldn't live without: Books.
Family: Parents Mimi Tygier & Rob Rubin are business partners, brother Jonathan. We still have family dinner every Sunday.
Pet peeve: Speed limits and parking meters.
Startling fact: Rowed the Head of the Charles in a single (didn’t finish dead last!).
