What You Don’t Know About Heather Arnold

Title: Research and analysis director, Streetsense.
Job: Provide cities and developers data-driven info to create and improve retail conditions in downtowns. 
Years on the job: 5.
Company: Brokerage and design and strategy firm for retail, restaurants, and hospitality.
Memorable project: DC Vibrant Retail Streets Toolkit for DC Office of Planning. Ongoing project since ’11 to create step-by-step process for communities to improve neighborhood commercial districts. Methodology applied to 19 neighborhoods so far. 
Current project: Working with Loudoun County Economic Development on market approach to future retail growth. 
CRE career: Started in ’98 working in a mixed-use planning group. Someone asked why stores and restaurants struggle in “new town” projects. Started researching it and never stopped.
Grew up: Central PA.
Current home: Rockville.
Why DC: A boy (now husband). 
Schools: UVA and Cornell.
First job: Environmental review of historic bridges in Maryland and Virginia.
Job in another life: Seismologist.
Daily habit: Up at 6am with dog, then coffee and Morning Joe.
Favorite app: Waze.
Favorite movies: Anything by Wes Anderson (Rushmore) and any with Adam Sandler. 
Favorite restaurants: Rural Society and Guapo’s.
Favorite music: Alternative ‘80s.
Favorite vacation spot: Rome.
Guilty pleasures: Coffee, chocolate, silence.
Bucket list: To walk over trusses of Sydney Harbor Bridge.
Family: Married to Larry 11 years; two kids (9 and 7); dog, Willie; two cats, Princess and Lily; and two fish. 
Hobbies: Shopping (for research), drawing, traveling, binge watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Startling fact: Comes from a retail family–parents own and manage a children’s clothing store.
