What You Don’t Know About Paul Weinschenk

Title: Managing director/VP, WRIT.
Company: Over 2.5M SF of retail; 4.7M SF of office; and 3k units of multifamily in DC region. 
Job: Growing NOI on existing and new assets; work closely with leasing team to fill space, property management team on operations, and analytical team on underwriting potential purchases. 
Memorable project: Fairfax Corner (300k SF mixed-use). When planning started in late 90s, layout was run-of-the-mill. Then saw opportunity to combine retail, office, entertainment, and residential in pedestrian-friendly way. Far from sure thing when opened in 2003 but has done great.
Current project: Acquired block of retail in Spring Valley, on upper Mass. Ave., that’s home to region’s first Crate & Barrel. Looking at ideas for long-term growth.
Grew up: Charlottesville.
Current home: Arlington.
Why DC: After architecture degree in '87.
Schools: UVA (Architecture) and Keenan-Flagler at UNC (MBA).
First job: Painter and laborer on construction site during high school. 
Daily habit: Fat-free yogurt, fresh fruit, honey, and granola. Goes through gallons a month.
Favorite apps: INRIX – helps navigate DC traffic jams; Photosynth for fun – stitch a bunch of pictures together to create 360-degree image.
Favorite movies: The Godfather, Fight Club, and Day of the Jackal. 
Favorite restaurant: Guajillo in Arlington. 
Favorite music groups: The Beatles and Black Keys. 
Favorite vacation spot: The Adirondacks. Been going for years to same spot wife started visiting at age 4.
Guilty pleasure: Dulce de Leche ice cream. “Two ingredients: milk and sugar. It’s phenomenal.”
Bucket list: Cross-country drive. No interstates, no GPS, no time limit.
Family: Married to Jennifer, and two sons Bennett and Graham. “There’s a cat in the house, but we keep our distance.”
Startling fact: Avid bike rider – covered every street in Arlington.
