Austin-based Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is adding to its D.C. area expansion plans with a new theater in Crystal City

The movie theater and restaurant chain has signed on to 1770 Crystal Drive, a mixed-use development planned by Vornado that will become part of JBG Smith's massive Crystal City pipeline, the Washington Business Journal reports.

The 1770 Crystal project will convert an old 12-story office building into residential, adding a six-story addition and a new retail building, plus a new Metro station entrance.

Alamo Drafthouse features a full-service food and beverage menu served to movie-watchers at their seats. The chain has opened one D.C.-area location at Ashburn's One Loudoun development. It signed a deal in April with The JBG Cos. to open at Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center in Woodbridge. It will open its first location in the District in 2019 at MRP Realty's Bryant Street project in Northeast D.C.

JBG and Vornado expect to finalize their merger next month to become JBG Smith, a publicly traded company. 1770 Crystal is one of several Crystal City projects JBG Smith has planned. The developer plans 650 residential units and 120K SF of retail between that project and the nearby 1800 South Bell and 2121 Crystal Drive properties. After those projects, it could build another 3,300 residential units and 110K SF of retail on other nearby sites in Crystal City.
