Old Town's Cheapest Hotels May Disappear

Old Town North is experiencing a thriving renewal, which will leave three of its most affordable lodging options in the dust. The underperforming Travelodge, Towne Motel and Best Western Colony Inn are likely to be replaced by three redevelopment plans under review by Alexandria's Planning Office. Mahmood Investment Corp. hopes to demolish the two-story Travelodge at 700 and 710 N Washington St, and replace it with a 40k SF four-story mixed-use building with 30 residential units, an existing historic townhome, and 6,259 SF of retail with underground parking, the Washington Business Journal reports. Shakti LLC has submitted plans to redevelop the 26-room Towne Motel in Alexandria, at 802-814 N Washington, into a five-story hotel. And Best Western Colony Inn owner CIA Colony Inn LLC has filed plans to redevelop the 49-room brick hotel at 1101 N Washington as 24 townhouse condos called the North-Parc Residences. [WBJ]
