Uber's Self-Driving Cars Returning To San Francisco

Placeholder

In the latest turn of events, Uber plans to bring its self-driving cars back to the streets of San Francisco. This time they will be guided manually and used for mapping purposes only, reports the San Francisco Business Times. Self-driving services will be disabled.

Uber previously launched a self-driving pilot program, but did not receive proper permits from the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The DMV ordered Uber to stop driving its cars, and after much debate, Uber sped off to Arizona to continue its pilot program.

State lawmakers have since proposed a bill to fine unpermitted companies $25k/day until they are street-legal. California has issued permits to more than 20 companies for the use of self-driving cars. [SFBT]
