Redevelopment At Hillsdale Shopping Center Nears Completion

C.W. Driver Cos. has topped out the redevelopment of Hillsdale Shopping Center’s north block in San Mateo. The general contractor’s reconfiguration of the 12.5-acre northern portion of the center involves tearing down the Sears building and redeveloping the surface lot and 291K SF retail, dining and entertainment space, which will include a luxury movie theater.

Hillsdale Shopping Center is one of several malls under renovation to add more entertainment elements to attract more shoppers. Led by C.W. Driver Cos. Project Executive Corky Silva and Senior Superintendent Leo O’Brien, the project is expected to be completed in the fall.

The redevelopment will include the installation of a show fountain from Outside the Lines. Developer Bohannon Development Co. and C.W. Driver partnered with OTL and landscape architect Lifescapes International to satisfy San Mateo’s Art in Public Places ordinance.

OTL has designed and will construct the 1,871 SF show fountain in Hillsdale’s main public plaza. The fountain will be surrounded by gathering and seating areas. The fountain will consist of 71 individually controlled aerated nozzles choreographed at low display heights. In addition, the fountain will have 142 color-changing LED lights that will be individually choreographed. The fountain is expected to be completed in Q4.

Hillsdale Shopping Center is one of the largest enclosed shopping centers in the region and attracts 8 million shoppers each year.
