Mill Creek Residential has broken ground on a 205-unit apartment complex in Downtown Berkeley. The project, Modera Acheson Commons, will include 14K SF of retail and is the company’s sixth Bay Area development.

Modera Acheson Commons will consist of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units contained within four buildings with an average of 716 SF. Community amenities include two rooftop decks that include barbecues and fire pits. Residents will have access to a 24-hour club-quality fitness studio, a spacious clubhouse, WiFi lounges and controlled-access garage parking.

Apartment interiors will include custom cabinetry, Energy Star stainless-steel appliances, in-home washers and dryers, wood plank-style flooring, high ceilings and built-in shelving. Select homes will include separate dining and den areas, walk-in closets, loft layouts and private balconies or patios. Move-ins are expected to begin mid-2020.

The transit-oriented apartment complex will be at University and Shattuck avenues, have access to the west entrance to UC Berkeley and will be adjacent to the university’s Energy Biosciences Building. It also will be close to the Downtown Berkeley BART Station.

As part of the development, Mill Creek will restore the Acheson Physicians Building, which was built in 1908, into residential loft-style homes. Modera Acheson Commons will contribute over $4M to the city’s affordable housing trust fund.

In addition to Modera Acheson Commons, Mill Creek is developing a 180-unit apartment complex in San Francisco’s Rincon Hill, a 168-unit complex in San Jose and an apartment complex in Jack London Square. It also developed a complex in Walnut Creek and San Francisco’s Dogpatch, which have since sold.
