Portland ranks as the ninth greenest city in the nation, according to a new report by WalletHub

Overall, the list is dominated by West Coast cities, especially California, with San Francisco, San Diego and Fremont at first, second and third, San Jose at fifth, and Sacramento, Irvine and Oakland at Nos. 7, 8 and 10, respectively.

Among the top 10, the only East Coast city is Washington, D.C., at sixth. Honolulu came in at No. 4.

To determine which cities are the most sustainable, WalletHub compared the 100 largest U.S. cities across 22 indicators of environmental friendliness and sustainability.

Among others, those metrics include greenhouse-gas emissions per capita, percentage of green space, percentage of commuters who drive, Walk and Bike Scores, green job opportunities per capita and number of smart-energy policies and initiatives.

Down at the bottom — the least green cities, according to WalletHub — are St. Petersburg, Florida; Louisville, Kentucky; Jacksonville, Florida; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Corpus Christi, Texas.
