Veterans Memorial Coliseum Designated A National Treasure

The Veterans Memorial Coliseum has been labeled a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The designation is more than just a title likely to attract tourism; the National Trust for Historic Preservation is working to develop a plan to revitalize the 56-year-old sports venue, according to The Oregonian.

This status comes at a critical time for the city, which has been evaluating possible scenarios for rehabilitation. In 2009, the city nearly tore it down to make room for a minor-league baseball stadium.

Categorizing 60 sites in America as National Treasures in the last five years, the National Trust for Historic Preservation was asked by the local preservation group Friends of Memorial Coliseum to take a look at the aging building. [TO]
