Skanska USA recently relocated its Philadelphia office to a 19k SF space in Blue Bell, where it will capture LEED Gold by late fall. We asked its Ed Szwarc to explain what impact the move had on the firm's business, and what prompted it in the first place. He tells us that aside from needing a more efficient and work-friendly space for operations, the company also wanted to better reflect the work it does. “We always urge our clients to pursue our green options and innovations," he says, "because they make fiscal sense and promote a healthier environment.”

With the new office’s many eco-friendly features, such as flooring, countertops and carpet made from 40% recycled materials (oh, that's where our old TV went), it’s easy to forget that Skanska had more than just LEED-CI certification in mind. According to Ed, a daylight-based lighting design and open layout dotted with functional work groups has already increased employee enthusiasm, collaboration, and communication.
