ARCHITECT TEMPER DE-FLARER

Blackney Hayes just launched a new in-house engineering division, BHH Engineers, which promises to keep the firm's architects and contractors from coming to blows over such emotionally-laden construction issues as ceiling duct and plumbing installation. (Which is good for most, but bad for any compulsive gamblers who liked action on architect fights.) The mechanical engineer Mark Hershman will be heading up the division. "Basically, we're producing an integrated system that the contractors will have an easier time installing, because it'll be pre-engineered to fit the space," he tells us. "And that has a tremendous benefit to the owner, because they know the installation will be a smoother operation."

Rowan University will be one of the first clients to experience the new integrated process, Mark says. BHH is working on a 50k SF mixed-use building for the school that'll have two floors each of classrooms and office space, with retail on the ground floor, along Rowan Boulevard. Other projects in the BHH pipeline include an activity center at New Jersey's Ocean County College, and the Marion P. Thomas Charter School in Newark.
