Justice Samuel Alito joined Lawyers Have Heart this week to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
Alito keynoted the first-ever Lawyers Have Heart celebratory dinner, where we found him with LHH co-founder and Sidley Austin partner Alan Raul. LHH's annual 10K for heart health and awareness is popular with DC lawyers, and Justice Alito's speech stuck to the topic of athletic attorneys. It turns out that Justice John Marshall, while in the Continental Army, enjoyed racing other soldiers in camp. Justice Byron White, known for his football prowess, also played basketball on the court above the Court (not allowed while it is in session, since the thumps of the ball can be heard from the courtroom). And Justice William O. Douglas hiked the 189 mile C&O Canal towpath to discourage it from being turned into a parkway. (Alito himself has completed a marathon "in less time than it takes to fly here from Tokyo.")
LHH has raised almost $10M for the American Heart Association since it was founded in '91. Before dinner, we snapped US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit Judge Brett Kavanaugh flanked by Cardiology Associates' Reggie Robinson and Appellate Daily's Michelle Olsen.
In the stately Anderson House of the Society of the Cincinnati (the country's oldest patriotic organization, founded in 1783), more than 100 guests enjoyed a dinner of antipasto salad wrapped in cucumber, salmon tikka, and chocolate souffle cake. Attendees were veterans of the LHH 10K and more. McDermott partner Joanne Ludovici, team captain of the McDermott "Fast Trackers" (here with Gene Piskator), is an avid runner with 12 marathons under her belt.
