The almost century-old National Bank of Washington has sat vacant for more than a decade, but new plans could lead to a revival for the historic building.

Lincoln Property, which manages the building on behalf of the Minneapolis-based Cafesjian Family Foundation, has proposed an 11-story, 127k SF office addition to the 14th and G streets NW building, the Washington Business Journal reports.

The developer's plans must receive approval from the Historic Preservation Review Board and could face opposition given the iconic stature of the building and the addition's departure from the building's limestone exterior.

Along with architect Shalom Baranes Associates, Lincoln says it aims to preserve most of the building's historic exterior and keep its entrance intact, using its main hall as a lobby for the addition. A previous plan to convert the building into an Armenian Genocide Museum fell through after a legal battle. [WBJ]
