The quarter-century-long head of D.C.-based National Real Estate Advisors is departing the firm as part of a planned succession.

Beginning in January 2027, Kevin Verdi, the company’s current chief investment officer and executive vice president, will take over as president and CEO from Jeffrey Kanne, National announced Thursday.
Kanne, who is retiring, will still serve as a special adviser to the firm. He called his tenure the “privilege of a lifetime to work alongside such talented colleagues, trusted investors, and valued partners.”
“Kevin has been instrumental in National's success since day one, and I have complete confidence in his leadership and vision for the firm's next chapter,” he said in the company's press release.
Verdi has been with National since its inception in 2010 and with its predecessor, NEBF Real Estate, since 2000, a spokesperson for National told Bisnow. That company spun off National to manage real estate investments for pension funds and other institutional investors, according to National's website.
Verdi has served as National’s CIO since 2019, the spokesperson said. He was promoted to executive vice president in January.
“I am honored to lead National into its next phase of growth and remain committed to advancing our long-term investment strategy while delivering results for our investors," Verdi said in the release.
National is a partner on one of the largest residential projects in D.C. proper: The Stacks at Buzzard Point. The first phase, delivered last year, brought 1,100 units, 40K SF of retail and 22K SF of outdoor space online. The next phase is set to include 1,000 more units and up to two hotels, but the timeline for construction is unclear. Its subsidiary, National Real Estate Development, is also one of the developers behind the project.
It's also the owner and developer of Aviator House, a 157-unit conversion of the former Air Line Pilots Association headquarters in downtown D.C. That project, which received a 20-year Housing in Downtown tax abatement, is now leasing.
