The Arlington County Board has approved a large redevelopment project for the corner of Columbia Pike and George Mason Drive.

Gone will be the existing Food Star grocery store and several small retail businesses, and in their place will rise the Columbia Pike Village Center from developer Orr Properties. The project will include a new six-story apartment building and retail space, ARLnow reports.

Plans call for 365 residential units, a new 50k SF grocery store, over 31k SF of ground-floor retail, a 22k SF public square, and a three-level parking garage with space for both vehicles and bikes. As part of the redevelopment project, Orr will help to build new six-foot-wide sidewalks and make streetscape improvements to the busy intersection.

This is latest redevelopment project on Columbia Pike to receive the green light from the ACB. Back in December, the board unanimously approved a redevelopment of the Arlington Presbyterian Church at 3507 Columbia Pike. The project is a partnership between the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing and the church congregation, and will consist of 173 affordable housing units with ground-level retail space. [ARL]
