Old City Development Group is planning to redevelop an old Shaw bakery warehouse into a 56k SF building combining office, residential and retail.
The Historic Preservation Review Board approved the project at its most recent meeting, UrbanTurf reports.
German immigrant Michael Holzbeierlein built the warehouse in 1893 for the Holzbeierlein Bakery. Now the oldest surviving bakery building in the District, it remained open until the owner declared bankruptcy in 1953.
Old City bought the building for $660k in 2002, according to property records. Working with PGN Architects, the developer plans to adapt the building into 41k SF of office and retail plus nine residential units totaling 15k SF. The developer is still going through the Board of Zoning Adjustments, which will hold a public hearing for the project on March 15.
