Plans for a new mixed-use project in Southwest DC have been met with opposition from area residents.
Shakespeare Theatre and Erkiletian Development filed plans for a project known as The Bard, at 501 I Street SW, Curbed reports. Residents in the vicinity are not too pleased, and have taken to a website and Twitter account to voice concerns, with some arguing that the plans undermine the Southwest Neighborhood Plan, which serves as a guide for area development.
Development is slated to span 149k SF with 131k SF earmarked for residential space. The residential units are expected to be apartments, with 29 set aside for actors and five for fellows at the theatre. Shalom Baranes has been tasked with design for the project, which is also slated to include underground parking, artist studios, non-profit office space and educational space.
The site is just a couple of blocks away from the Waterfront Metro station, an area that will see ground broken on a mid-rise residential project from Mill Creek Residential in the coming months. The View at Waterfront will bring 260 residential units spread across two 85-foot tall buildings and over 5k SF of retail to the area. [Curbed]
