As competition heats up among Capitol Riverfront's growing supply of apartment buildings, one development is offering a fresh new amenity.

F1RST, a 325-unit building that opened in April across the street from Nationals Park, will soon feature a rooftop vegetable and herb garden to provide produce for its residents.

The development team of Grosvenor Americas, McCaffery Interests and CEI is partnering with D.C.-based Up Top Acres for design and maintenance of the garden. Planting is beginning this month for the first harvest, which will include arugula, zucchini and basil.

Founded in 2014, Up Top Acres also manages rooftop gardens at nearby 55 M St. SE and 1015 Half St. SE, plus one in Bethesda and one atop Penn Quarter restaurant Oyamel.

“Knowing that Up Top Acres has farms on office buildings in Capitol Riverfront, we wanted to add the one-of-a-kind amenity to F1RST,” McCaffery Interests Project Manager of Development Luke Koczela said in a release. “Our residents will be able to grill vegetables 10 feet from where they were grown.”
