The 1920s-era Takoma Theater, built by famous architect John Jacob Zink, is getting a new life.
Rock Creek Property Group broke ground Wednesday on a project to turn the historic theater into 23k SF of office, retail and entertainment space. The developer is looking to lease the property, a two-story loft building with 15- to 20-foot ceilings, to one or more tenants. It is set to deliver this summer.
Zink designed 200 theaters nationwide during his heyday. The project received Historic Preservation Review Board approval last spring. The developer plans to restore the Takoma sign and exterior masonry, and on the inside it will restore the exposed steel trusses for the second-floor loft. To improve the lighting, it will add windows and put skylights in the roof.
"Our goal was to modernize the property and flood the interior with natural light, while restoring much of the exterior and enhancing the historic features of the property,” Rock Creek principal Gary Schlager said in a release.
