Residents and workers in DC's West End will be able to enjoy a game of squash for as little as $10 per player starting Saturday.
The eight-court, 20K SF squash facility opens this weekend at 2233 M St. NW. The facility, Squash on Fire, is part of Eastbanc's West End Fire Station development, which also includes 61 affordable housing units.
The facility has a membership-free model and is promoting itself as the first pay-as-you-go squash facility in the U.S. The facility also features a full-service bar and restaurant, a green patio overlooking M Street, locker rooms and a pro shop.
"Squash on Fire is not simply a set of eight state-of-the-art courts," said Eastbanc president Anthony Lanier, who created the squash concept and is speaking at Bisnow's Washington DC State of the Market event next month. "It's design-driven architecture combines function, performance and technology, and will help position squash as one of the most exciting and dynamic sports of our time. Squash on Fire will bring the sport to the DC community in a completely unprecedented way.”
Two blocks away, Eastbanc is preparing to deliver its Westlight project this summer. The building has a rental tower with 93 units and a condo tower with 71 for-sale homes, which had people lining up down the street when sales began in November.
The squash facility is also two blocks from where Barack Obama is leasing office space, so players could hope for a visit from the famously fit former president.
